Aidlink: Connecting Aid Agencies With People Who Need Help

Across the developing world, demand for humanitarian services is growing - but it's tough for aid agencies to get help to those who need it: Many communities can't be reached by road. Few families have Internet or regular electricity. AidLink overcomes these barriers through an easy-to-use SMS service: It lets aid agencies send SMS alerts to customized "mailing lists" of local farmers, families, or small business owners in multiple locations, giving them personalized updates about emergency aid and other services - right on their mobile.

AidLink Also lets aid agencies send SMS surveys to people who need help. These short questionnaires allow agencies to get key information from needy families or individuals, even if they can't be reached in person.

To create a survey, agency staff work with SoukTel to write a specific list of questions (e.g.. "Where can you pick up medicine? Choose the nearest hospital to your home: 1-Central Hospital; 2-Memorial Hospital"). The questions are then sent by SMS to customized mailing lists of people in need. Young men in Casablanca, or all students in Northern Baghdad. Questions are answered via SMS as well, and the answers are fed into a web interface that aid agencies can access at any time.

What We Provide

If your organization would like to run an AidLink alert or survey service, we can:

  • Create a customized web and phone messaging system for you: Choose your language, layout, and features. Integrate the system with your own website or database. Create multiple user accounts.
  • Connect your system to national mobile networks. Set up shortcodes (short phone numbers like "5050") that let users access your system by SMS. Manage SMS message purchase.
  • Train your staff (remotely or in-country) on managing the system. We also provide user manuals in English, French, and Arabic.
  • Host your system on dedicated servers in the US. Or we'll install the software on your own servers.
  • Provide technical support in English, French, or Arabic, 7 days a week.

What You'll Need

  • One staff member at your organization who can learn how the system works and then create alerts/surveys on an ongoing basis.
  • Internet connection in your main office, so your staff can manage the system online. However, you don't need to buy any new computers or mobiles!
  • Budget to buy bulk SMS messages if you'd like to send information alerts to community members.
